" Paint on the Move" in Avalon, California
$45.00 each session- sign up for all or one
Oil on canvas  or Watercolor-Travel journals
Beginning & those with studio painting experience who want to paint from life.
Sessions will be timed so you  will have  time to enjoy the Catalina Art Festival, shop, and enjoy the island. You can sign up for one or all the sessions. If you are a total beginner to oil I will have a small "kit" prepared that you can purchase. It will give you a chance to try oils in plein air before making big money commitment to supplies.

Catalina is the perfect place to bring your family while you paint. There is a scuba/snorkel preserve, hiking trails, sea kayaks, no need for a car you can walk everywhere, good food, you can stay cheap or fancy, shopping or just loafing. I am not responsible for foggy days, rain or a bad ferry ride, come prepared to paint no matter what. This is Plein air , that means you have no control over the sun, wind, or people!

DEMO NOTES

Coming out to Catalina Island is always a treat for me and I can’t wait to get down on canvas, the colors of the boats, the mist in the air and the people on the boardwalk. Most of my time is spent painting at my home in the Arizona desert. Plein air painting allows me to paint from life, to see the actual colors, feel the atmosphere, and try to get all that down in oil paint. I purposely travel and paint to provide myself as much variety in subjects as possible, keeping me from getting in a rut and keeping my artwork fresh.  At my demo I hope to encourage other painters who may be used to working in the studio, or mostly from photos, and even the beginning painter, to get out and paint from life.  I have made so many blunders painting outdoors and will share those experiences so others can learn!  Your paints can go with you everywhere, they are easy to set up, and so rewarding to have a small finished piece that stands alone, or that can be used as a true to life study for creating a larger work.  I will go over how to pack, and how to keep it simple. We will also discuss how to actually begin. How to make decisions like, what do I paint and what the heck to I do now?  There is no reason to feel intimidated about painting plein air, and the rewards are so worth the trouble.

After your first trip to Catalina you will make it a regular place to take friends,
go on a romantic holiday, or set out to paint. The island is easy to access from
Long Beach, CA by ferry. There are many choices for lodging and great food.
The Catalina Art Association has  been around for at least 49 years with
a rich history of painters setting up their easels to capture the beauty of this
island . The island is a favorite stop for cruise ships out of LA and visited by day trippers from the coast.

The Art Association Gallery is located inside the red roofed Casino building.
During the year you will find mostly my smaller plein air pieces of Catalina in this gallery.
